Should You Go To Modeling School?

Many aspiring models have signed up for modeling classes only to discover they’ve been the victims of a scam. This is unfortunate because there are actually a number of reputable modeling schools that have successfully helped many new models sharpen their skills and approach the industry with confidence. While modeling school does not guarantee your success in the industry, it can be a helpful stepping-stone for many aspiring models who are new to the industry.

In addition to researching the modeling school before you sign up or pay any fees, it’s also important that you learn about the school’s curriculum. To make sure that you benefit from the experience, you want to be sure that you’ll learn valuable information about the industry and helpful tips that can help you secure jobs in the future.

A reputable modeling school should help you to:

- Develop good posture

- Learn the fundamentals of walking on the runway

- Learn how to apply makeup and take care of your skin

- Develop poise and self confidence

- Adopt good nutritional habits

- Learn how to model for the camera

Modeling schools can be extremely helpful for models who are new to the industry and want an opportunity to learn about the industry in a comfortable, nurturing environment.

You should not sign up for modeling schools that require you to pay for photo shoots with specific photographers. Additionally, you should not sign up for modeling schools as a requirement for being signed to an agency. These are common tactics used by disreputable agencies.

Additionally, a reputable modeling school should give you a realistic assessment of your modeling potential. If a modeling school promises you work based on enrolling in their school – it may be a scam.

Are you interested in talking to other aspiring models who have enrolled in modeling schools? Visit http://www.StarSearchCasting.com and post your questions in our community forum to learn more about other Star Search Casting members’ experiences in the modeling industry.

New Year, New Agency?

Do you have representation but still don’t feel like your career is taking off? Often aspiring singers, dancers, actors and models are so excited to sign with an agency, but then the experience leaves much to be desired. There are many reasons why clients are dismayed by their relationship with their agency. Perhaps they are not being sent on auditions frequently or at all. Maybe, especially if they signed with a smaller agency, they don’t feel as though they are getting the personal attention that they expected or were promised.

Are you unhappy with your agent, but you’re simply not sure if you should leave the agency? Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you feel that your agent or manager has a strong knowledge of the business?
  • Does your agent or manager have good relationships with casting directors, producers and directors? Or is your agent actively trying to develop these kinds of relationships?
  • Does your agent send you out on auditions that you are well suited for?
  • Does your agent believe in you?
  • Is your agent or manager a skilled negotiator?
  • Is your agent or manager trustworthy?
  • Does your agent or manager make sure that you’re paid in a timely manner?

If you’ve answered no to several of these questions, then it’s probably time to start exploring other agencies. There’s nothing wrong with exploring your options if you’re unhappy with your representation, as long as you aren’t bound by contractual obligations. But it’s very important that no matter what, you try to leave your old agency without burning any bridges.

Before you do anything else, let your agent or manager know that you’re unhappy. Give him or her a chance to turn things around. Perhaps you somehow got lost in the shuffle and your agent just needed a nudge to give you the additional attention you deserve. If that doesn’t work and you’re still unhappy, be sure to tell your agent that you’re exploring other options before you begin contacting other agents. It’s a small world out there and you don’t want to be perceived by your old agent or a potential new agent as dishonest.

If in the end you part ways, it’s important to be as polite and respectful as possible. Don’t give your old agent any reason to say anything negative about you to others in the industry. Be sure to thank your old agent for the opportunity and any assistance they’ve given you.

If you’re looking for a new agent in your area, visit http://www.StarSearchCasting.com and click on our 'Talent Resources' page to view the tons of agents in our database. Good luck!

How To Cry On Cue

You’ve landed a great dramatic role, but you have to cry on camera. What do you do? If you have trouble crying on cue, that doesn’t mean you’re not a great dramatic actor or actress. Trust me, some of your favorite celebrities who have been in the business for years still have trouble getting the tears to fall.

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your big dramatic moment. Try a few of these and you’ll be sobbing in no time:

  • Think back to a sorrowful time in your life. For some actors, simply finding a powerful impulse for crying works like a charm.

  • Open your eyes wide and resist the temptation to blink. Exposing your eyes to the air using this tactic can help your eyes begin to water.

  • Cut up onions or wave the fumes from eucalyptus oil near your eyes just before your scene.

  • Use eye drops.

  • Is there a scene in a movie that gets you every time? Bring your IPod or portable DVD player and watch a sad scene right before your big performance.

  • Study other scenes where actors have cried convincingly on camera. By mimicking their body language, facial expressions, and vocal cues, it may help you to get the tears flowing when you need them to.

Be sure to practice these methods before your performance in front of a mirror to make sure you appear authentic. If you’re still unable to cry, try the scene a different way. Instead, have the character attempt to fight back tears, which can be equally compelling onscreen.

The Cutting Room Floor

You’ve auditioned for 20 roles and you’ve finally booked one! Hooray! You show up on set to shoot your scene and when the project is released, you gather all of your friends together to watch your Hollywood debut. But wait a minute! The television episode or film comes to an end and your scene is missing. What happened? Oh no! You may have been a victim of the cutting room floor.

This happens more often than you may think. The cutting room floor is a term that refers to where footage ends up when the director and editor decide not to use it in the final edited version. (These days all editing is done using computers, so the footage doesn’t actually end up “on the floor” anymore – but you get the idea.) Many new actors who experience this are often devastated. It can be a huge letdown to have worked so hard to finally book your first role and then not have it immortalized on screen. But don’t let it get you down. Just because your scene wasn’t included doesn’t mean that the director didn’t like your performance. The project may have been running long requiring some scenes to be cut to fit within time constraints. And sometimes once all of the scenes are shot, the director may decide that some scenes are no longer as relevant to the story.

Even though your scene may have been cut, there’s still a lot that to be happy about. First off, you booked a role and not only are you now a working actor but I’m sure you probably met a lot of really great people in the process. Secondly, these days when most films are released on DVD, footage that was not included in the final edited version is often available to watch in the Extras section. So you can still see your performance and you can still use the footage on your reel!

Most experienced working actors don’t get upset if their scene gets cut. They know that it’s part of the business and they know it’s only a matter of time before they book another role. So are you ready to book your next job? Of course you are! Visit http://www.StarSearchCasting.com today and check out our casting notices. I bet there’s a role of a lifetime out there with your name on it!

Do You Have a Model Attitude?

Each year thousands of girls contemplate if they have what it takes to become a professional model. Am I tall enough? Am I thin enough? Are my teeth straight enough? While many modelsagencies and art directors look for, many fail to consider the other important attributes that a successful model must have. In addition to having a marketable look, you’ll need to be sure that you’re equipped with the emotional and mental tools that you’ll need for a successful career in the cutthroat fashion industry. And most importantly, you’ll need to have a positive attitude. wonder if they have the physical requirements that

While many well-known supermodels have been accused of displaying “diva tendencies” everywhere from runways and sets to international airports, it’s important to remember that emulating this behavior can sink your modeling dreams. When you’re trying to get your foot in the door of the fashion industry, you’ll have to be cheerful, agreeable and enthusiastic to a fault - even if you’re having a bad day.

One thing that you may not know is that when you’re meeting with an agency, art director, photographer or fashion editor, in addition to evaluating your look, they will engage in conversation with you to evaluate your attitude. This will give them a better idea of what you’ll be like to work with on set. If you’re cheerful and up beat, then they know that you will be pleasant on the job. If you’re on time (with your book and comp cards in hand) then they will know that you’ll be responsible. However if you’re moody, unprepared, and unfocused – even if you have a great look – it’s very unlikely that you’ll be hired for the job.

Just like with many other careers in the entertainment industry, you may face a lot of rejection along the path to becoming a successful model. And unfortunately, it can be extremely disappointing and take an emotional toll on you. However if you go to a meeting still wearing your disappointment from a previous experience, you may run the risk of kissing that job goodbye too.

Think you’ve got a great look AND a great attitude! If so, and you’re ready to test the waters of the fashion industry, check out some of the great opportunities we have available at http://www.EliteCastingNetwork.com today!

Beware: Modeling Scam Alert

Whether you’re reading the newspaper, watching television, or having a discussion with friends, you’ve probably heard about the latest wave of internet scams. While the internet can be a useful tool, there are also dangers that we all must be aware of. Culprits prey on the vulnerability and blind ambition of those who are eager to find success in the entertainment industry no matter the cost. These scams can be not only costly, but also very dangerous.

Two of the most recent scams affecting the entertainment industry are the Google UK Modeling Scam and Dolphin Autos/Sharks Motors Scam. If you've logged into your Star Search Casting ( www.StarSearchCasting.com ) account, you've probably read about these scams in the Scam Watch section of our forums. Here’s how the Google UK Modeling scam goes:

“My name is Hilda.I am a Glamour model from the United Kingdom,London precisely.I have done several jobs with agencies, companies and corporations.

Currently,i am under contract with Google UK who are in search of models, who wish to sell the copyright of their photos. They are prepared to pay the sum of 2,500 Pounds Sterling per photo and they are in search of any model, who will sell the copyright of twenty of his/her photos. According to the management of Google UK,this company will buy the copyright of photos sold to them for an unlimited period of time.

If you are interested, you can send your email address to me and i will surely forward it to the company. Hope to hear from you.

Hilda”

And here is the Dolphin Autos scam message:

"Hello,

My name is Adam Spade. Am freelance modeling agent working for Dolphin Autos in Norcross, GA . I saw your profile and pictures while surfing the internet, I appreciate them and I would like us to do some works together. I presently have good offer for you. I want to know if you are interested in modeling because I need pictures of a good looking person who will be on the magazine cover of one of my Auto sales Company.

Please let me know if you are interested in the Job. You stand a chance of making reasonable $750 from this deal to start, and even a noticeable fame. If you are really interested in my offer and I would give you further details email me directly to my personal email address .. adam.spade@yahoo.com .

God Bless
Adam Spade”

Both of these scams are setup to steal your money using fake money orders. For example, in the Dolphin Autos scam they will tell you that they are paying you upfront for the modeling shoot. They will mail you a fake money order for $2900.00 and you are supposed to take $750.00 out for yourself and send the remainder through Western Union or bank wire to the makeup artist and hair stylist. When you deposit the fake money order in your bank account if the bank doesn’t figure out it is fake at that time they will allow you to withdrawal the $2150 cash and you can then send it back to the scammer. A few days later the bank will contact you telling you the money order was fake and bounced and you owe them all of the money back immediately. But because you sent the cash with a bank wire or Western Union you have no way to get the money back from the scammer. So in this scam you loose $2150!

We’ve taken great measures at Star Search Casting to make sure that our members are aware of the latest scams that are lurking on the web. Make sure you log in to your SSC account and check out the Scam Watch section daily so that you know which scams are out there. Stay tuned tomorrow when I’ll go over ways to identify and avoid casting scams.

HOW TO LAND A JOB IN HOLLYWOOD WITHOUT AN AGENT (Part 2)

One of the best parts about my job is hearing success stories from aspiring actors, singers, dancers and models whose hard work is paying off in the industry. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t hear or read about someone who’s finally getting a chance to go out on an audition, or someone who’s booked really huge role.

If you read yesterday’s blog, then you read all about Melina Rochelle and her new role in City Kid, the musical. Melina Rochelle is a singer and an actress and although she doesn’t have an agent, she’s been working hard and landing great opportunities in Hollywood. Yesterday she offered some really great tips that have helped her succeed in the industry. Here are a few more tips she had to share:

  • “Always be prepared. If you’re a singer or an actor, always have a song or monologue that you can perform upon request. If you’re a dancer, have something prepared that showcases what you do best. If you’re a model, always have photos or composite cards on hand at all times.”

  • “Don't wait around for someone to discover your talents. Showcase yourself. Whether it’s through your own production or talent showcase, get yourself out there. My sisters and I started our own production company and produced a musical that was reviewed in the LA Weekly and nominated for several awards.”

  • “And last but not least, be sure to use the internet to your advantage. You can find really great information and opportunities on the web to help you further your career.”

Those are really great tips and I hope you find them to be useful. I also hope you’ll visit our site for auditions and casting notices and keep me posted on your achievements in the industry. Just this past week over 7.000 members on our site were contacted by casting directors and other industry professionals. You can get the same results!

I hope you’ll read my blog tomorrow when I share information about turning a new role into representation! Thanks for stopping by!
